1930 Ford Coupe Top Chop

Here you can see that the right rear corner had a barb where the quarter panel bolts to the roof, that was holding it up about 1/8".

We did a little more grinding, the top went back on (for the final time) and we tacked it all around. Then we spent about a half hour standing around commenting on how bitchin' it looked with the 3" cut.

At about 10:30 pm we called it a night and cleaned up enough to lock up the doors.

It was a good day.

Saturday: I got the original windshield cut 3" at a local glass shop and got some rubber to set the glass in the frame. After running a few errands with my dad we got over to the shop at about noon to get started. It took about 1 hour to get the work area cleared out before we could begin work. The first task was to get the windshield put into the frame, and check the frame for fit on the car before we started welding everything up. This was the main area where we had some problems. The rubber was a little too thick and in the process of trying to squeeze and tap the frame onto the glass, I tapped a little too hard and/or a few too many times and broke the glass. So, we went to plan B. We used the other cut windshield that was 1/2" too narrow with the rubber that was too thick. We got the frame installed around the glass using some furniture clamps to apply pressure this time instead of a hammer. I'll take this windshield out and take the bare frame to the glass shop and have them cut me a new windshield after I get home. I'll also have them cut down the other 5 windows at the same time.

Messing with the windshield took up quite a bit of time. Once that was done and it was stashed safely away in the office. We got busy welding and grinding on the top. That's about all we did the rest of the day, welding and grinding, and drinking lots of ice water and sodas.

It was in the high 90's - low 100's all weekend. When we called it a day around 9:00pm,we had worked on it about 7 more hours and most of the grinding and welding was done. This included cutting the doors and welding & grinding on them.
